Please feel free to change the colours - they are only suggestions - perhaps even try a variegated or rainbow thread. 

You may of course use beads instead of French Knots.

Freebie: Cead Mile Failte

This design is "100,000 Welcomes" in Gaelic - topped off with a knotwork border. Feel free to select your own thread and fabric colours - the chart is in green but you could use your favourite colour. The border is actually one long rope crossing over and under itself so you can stitch it in just one colour or  follow the rope and use a variegated colour. You could also add shading at the intersections to show shadows where the ropes cross. The possibilities are endless - a bit like the knotwork!

Lindsay stitched this version in a subtle turquoise variegated thread.

Freebie: I Think I Love You...

A simple free design stitched using only backstitch and a few french knots (beads or colonial knots can be substituted) - I used one strand throughout.

The model was stitched with Gentle Art threads - Tutti Frutti, Buckeye Scarlet, Black Crow but feel free to choose your own colours.

To finish it I backed it with iron-on interfacing - this gives the fabric some body and prevents the edges from fraying badly

I then carefully machine stitched around the edge of the design with a thread that (almost) matched the fabric and added the blue paperclip as a decoration.
